When the sky turns moody and the waves crash a little louder, magic happens. For this Tybee Island engagement session, we met just before a summer thunderstorm rolled in—clouds swirling, ocean breeze dancing, and a golden light that only happens when the weather is on the brink of change.

The Perfect Coastal Setting

Tybee Island is one of our favorite places for engagement photos near Savannah, Georgia. With its wide sandy shores, wild dunes, and endless ocean horizon, it’s the perfect backdrop for couples who want both romance and adventure in their engagement portraits.

That evening, the clouds were heavy but the air was calm. The overcast sky acted like nature’s softbox, giving the beach a dreamy, even glow. As the wind picked up, we embraced the movement—hair blowing, dress flowing, and waves rolling in the background.

Their Timeless, Coastal-Inspired Outfits

The couple opted for chic neutrals, letting the natural beauty of the beach and their connection take center stage.

  • Her look: A sleek ivory gown with a one-shoulder neckline and minimal details, paired with barefoot elegance and a windswept hairstyle.
  • His look: A classic white short-sleeve button-down and light linen trousers, paired with worn leather shoes for a relaxed yet refined style.

The choice of light, airy fabrics made every movement feel effortless—and perfect for capturing that candid, windswept romance.

Why We Love Stormy Skies for Engagement Photos

While most couples hope for sunny skies, overcast and pre-storm light is actually incredibly flattering. The muted colors make skin tones glow, while dramatic skies add emotion and depth to the images. Plus, fewer beachgoers means a quieter, more intimate atmosphere for photos.

Tips for Your Own Tybee Island Engagement Session

  • Time it right: Early evening sessions capture the best light, especially if clouds are in the forecast.
  • Dress for the wind: Flowy fabrics and layers move beautifully in coastal breezes.
  • Be ready to move: Candid moments—walking hand in hand, twirling in the sand, leaning into each other against the wind—make for the most romantic images.
