You just got engaged and now you are starting to plan and look at wedding photographers for your wedding day. There are a number of those photographers who include engagement sessions and others that have that session as an add on. You might be looking locally, where you are getting married. Or you might be looking at destination photographers to capture a destination wedding for you. You begin asking, do I really need an engagement session?

We aren’t ones to make absolutes and make decisions for our couples, but what we always say is, we prefer to do them as your photographer. Here are a few reasons why:

Being Creative With It

Having an engagement session is an extension of celebrating the fact that you are getting married. Often times this is the first and last time you will plan an engagement and get married, so go all out. And that starts with being creative with your engagement session.

Engagement sessions can be planned out in new locations or meaningful locations. We have done both! Sometimes couples will travel to us to capture their session, sometimes we will travel to their city of residence and sometimes we will capture them in a destination location.

Engagement sessions are a great excuse to capture your love. But what we love most about it, it can be a fun excuse to get creative with it. Choose a beautiful tropical background, or a architectural building that you love.

Get to know your photographer

An engagement session is a great time to get to know your wedding photographer. You might have not been in front of a camera, and if so you might not have gotten photos taken together. Engagement sessions are low stress and you can take your time understanding your photographers posing style, how they work with you and that helps your nerves on the actual wedding day.

Choosing someone you have never met to be a part of such an intimate event in your life is worth spending some time getting to know them. You don’t want to feel uncomfortable on your wedding day or worry about the angles you don’t like, etc.

Capturing the memories

Just like your wedding day, the season of your engagement is a season of life. We are big proponents of taking time to capture all those seasons of life for the memories they hold. It also can serve as a memory to pass on to the future generation in your family, whether you have kids or not.

We often think back to our childhood, looking through photo albums of photos from all the seasons of life. When our parents were young to when they grew up, got married and starting having a family. Those photo books may have different quality of photos than we have now… but they are priceless now.

The sky is the limit for engagement photos, where you don’t have to think of others in mind when capturing them. Make this stage of your life fun and do something unexpected. Have those memories to share with friends and family or just yourself. You only get to capture them once.
